What is a Stand Down?

A stand down of employment occurs when an employer cannot use an employee because of circumstances beyond the control of the employer, such as the temporary break down of machinery.  In such a case, the employer may require an affected employee to take a short period of unpaid leave.

Under the Fair Work laws, an employer can legally stand down employees in certain circumstances.
