What is Personal Carer’s Leave?

Personal / carer’s leave is an accrued employment entitlement that allows a full-time or part-time employee to take paid leave if:

  • the employee is not fit for work because of a personal illness or injury affecting the employee; or
  • the employee needs to provide care or support to a member of the employee’s immediate family, or a member of the employee’s household, who needs care or support, because of a personal illness or injury, or an unexpected emergency affecting the member.

For each year of service with the same employer, all full-time employees are entitled to 10 days of paid personal / carer’s leave (part-time employees are entitled to personal carer’s leave on a pro-rata basis), and unused personal / carer’s leave accrues from year to year.  Casual employees are not entitled to paid personal / carer’s leave.

Personal / carer’s leave is sometimes also referred to as “sick leave”.
