Glossary

AIRC - The Australian Industrial Relations Commission, which was the main body handling workplace disputes in the  federal industrial relations system.  The AIRC had now been replaced by Fair Work Australia.

AFPCS - The Australian Fair Pay and Conditions Standard, which was replaced by the NES on 1 January 2012.

APCS - The Australian Pay and Classification Scale has largely been replaced by minimum wage provisions in modern awards.

BOOT - The Better Off Overall Test, which requires that an employee be 'better off overall' under a proposed enterprise agreement when compared to a relevant modern award and the NES.

ETP - Employment Termination Payment, which is made to an employee upon termination.

FBT - Fringe Benefits Tax, which is a tax paid by employers on certain benefits they provide their employees or associates.  FBT is separate from income tax and is based on the taxable value of various fringe benefits provided.

FMW - The Federal Minimum Wage.

FWA - Fair Work Australia, which is the main body that handles workplace disputes under the national industrial relations system.

FW Act - The Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth).

FWO - The Fair Work Ombudsman, being the government body that promotes and enforces compliance with industrial relations laws.

HRM - Human Resource Management.

IR - Industrial Relations.

ITEA - Individual Transitional Employment Agreement, which could only have been made during the transition to the new FW Act, and could not be made after 31 December 2009.

LSL - Long Service Leave.

NAPSA - Notional Agreement Preserving A State Award, being an agreement arising by virtue of the WR Act and the FW Act to preserve State Award and other State safety new conditions for national system employees.

NDT - No Disadvantage Test.  This test applied under the WR Act (WorkChoices), and under the FW Act, it has been replaced by BOOT.

NES - National Employment Standards.  A new minimum safety net for national system employees that sets out ten minimum employment conditions, which took effect from 1 January 2010.

OTE - Ordinary Time Earnings, being a term used to calculate compulsory superannuation.

PSA - Preserved State Agreement, being an agreement for employers and employees covered by a state agreement.

WR Act - Workplace Relations Act 1996 (Cth) (i.e WorkChoices)
