What are Penalty Rates?

Penalty rates are special wage rates that are payable to an employee for working on the weekend and / or on a Public Holiday.  Whether penalty rates are payable, and the level of penalty rates payable, depend on the Modern Award that applies to the particular employee.

For example, a Modern Award may establish the following penalty rates for work on a weekend and / or Public Holiday:

Saturday Work   150%
Sunday Work   200%
Public Holiday Work   250%
